“The Banking Concept of Education”

In Paulo Freire’s essay “The Banking Concept of Education” the author compares two education concepts: the banking concept and problem-solving concept. In his analysis the author claims that there is no benefit for students to study banking concept, thus teachers should not use this type of education concept in their teaching curriculum. However, various scholars and researchers have provided the benefit associated with the banking concept and problem-solving concept. Although the researchers argue that the two concepts intertwine, there is a big difference between the two educational concepts. If I could have an opportunity to choose an education system for my country, I would pick problem-solving concept.

First, banking concept is based on three elements which it regards as important for students: receiving, memorizing, and repeating information. On the other hand, problem-solving concept emphasizes filtering, thinking, and understanding as the core elements of effective study process. In banking concept, teachers resist dialogue. They do not want to have any conversation with students. In addition, teachers treat students as objects of assistance. They use students to make themselves become good teachers with good reputation. Teachers oppress students all the time. Further, they want students to perform well and get exemplary grades without any explications, but they fail to realize that students lack the understanding of things they are learning. Conversely, problem-solving concept implies another way of learning if compared to the banking concept. Teachers who use problem-solving approach ask students questions and have conversations with them. Teachers think it is necessarily to know students’ progress because in this way it is possible to evaluate how well students understand the material. In addition, teachers encourage students to become critical thinkers. They make students think approach the issue from several different perspectives instead of telling them the answers. It this way teachers make sure that students understand the concept fully.

Secondly, student’s success is quite different when using the two concept of teaching. Indeed, an educational system can significantly affect the future of a student. A student who is educated in the frame of banking concept will not be as successful as a student who is educated in a problem-solving concept environment. Banking concept aims at filling up students’ mind with material and teaches them ways to memorize information well. On the other hand, problem-solving concept introduces new information to students and explores their mind by teaching them to think critically. When students graduate from university and become workers, the education concept will bring its characteristics into their jobs. This implies that the attitudes they developed towards studying will be the same as their attitudes towards working. Students who are educated using banking concept do not understand the issues they are studying. As a result, they derive minimal practical use from the information they learn. Such students will strictly follow the rules outlined by the management and will be not likely to show creativity or independence on the job. On the other hand, students who are educated within the framework of problem-solving concept are good at solving problems and they can make their own decisions about how to handle things in different situations.
