"Normal" and "abnormal" behavior
Normal and abnormal behavior is always judged based on what is accepted and vice versa. There are myriad of difficulties in defining what is considered normal or abnormal. The first difficulty is because there is no standard of measurement for normal and abnormal. It is certainly difficult to state at what extent an acceptable behavior should be considered normal. Another difficulty lies in the fact that normal and behavior is an endless concept in the sense that it changes with situations, people, time and environment. For instance, there are behaviors that may be considered abnormal in one society but acceptable in another.
Culture influences the distinction of normal and abnormal in the sense that it sets the standards and norms for normal and abnormal. It is noteworthy that these standards and norms vary from one culture to another. Sexual variant is a collective term for deviant sexual behavior. paraphilia on the other hand is a psychosexual disorder characterized recurrent intense sexual urges and fantasia and may involves non-human objects, children or humiliation of oneself or a partner (Brannon, 2012). Most paraphiliacs are found to be men owing to the fact that the DSM-IV features normally meets behavior of men.
The United States higher incidence of rape
There are no good policies to curb rape incidences in the country. The United States needs to put in place tough judicial penalties to mitigate cases of rape. This rape myth demonstrated United States as a morally decadent society that does not respect the rights of women. This rape myth also creates a tension between males and females in the society, as women may perceive their male counterparts as threat rather than honorable fellow citizens.
Sexually Explicit Material
Pornographic films and magazines are examples of sexually explicit material (“Pornography”, 2012). Both violent and nonviolent sexually explicit materials have serious negative consequences to the society in the sense that they may motive incidences of rape (“Pornography”, 2012). Sexually explicit materials are also very addictive. There is no doubt that sexually explicit materials are dangerous to the society and such they must be censored to ensure that they do not fall into wrong hands especially minors.
