Integrated waste management project provides an elaborate framework and network of facilities that allows for the disposal, collection, transport and the management of waste materials within the region of its operation. The project through its strategies of proper management and monitoring of the waste products ensures clean environment for inhuman inhabitation. Due to the increased human activities in the world today, thousands of tonnes of waste products which reduce the quality of air, water, and soil are released into the surrounding areas. The accumulation of these waste products – both hazardous and non-hazardous- degrades environment, reduce aesthetic values, and affect human health and general life. According to the environmental analysts Malik and Grohmann (2011), approximately 24 metric tonnes of waste products are released around the world per day.
The commonest of all waste products are predominantly radio-active, gaseous, liquid and solid wastes from industrial, institutional, residential, and metropolitan areas (Anitra, 2007). To rid the global environment of all these pollutants, there is a dire need for the safe disposal of hazardous waste as well as recycling of enormous non-hazardous industrial and commercial wastes through proposed integrated waste management.
Too much waste products from industrial, institutional, residential and metropolitan areas find their way into the physical environment around the world. These pollutants affect human health and other life forms; reduce the aesthetic value of neighboring areas, and cause general poisoning if their quantities are allowed to accumulate. These problems are likely to escalate with the human population increase.
