Background Information

Due to the increased human activities in the world today, thousands of tonnes of waste products which reduce the quality of air, water, and soil are released into the surrounding areas. The accumulation of these waste products – both hazardous and non-hazardous- degrades environment, reduce aesthetic values, and affect human health and general life. According to the environmental analysts Malik and Grohmann (2011), approximately 24 metric tonnes of waste products are released around the world per day.

The commonest of all waste products are predominantly radio-active, gaseous, liquid and solid wastes from industrial, institutional, residential, and metropolitan areas (Anitra, 2007). To rid the global environment of all these pollutants, there is a dire need for the safe disposal of hazardous waste as well as recycling of enormous non-hazardous industrial and commercial wastes through proposed integrated waste management.
