An information system (IS) is a system of communication between two persons. Information System is generally involved in the whole process of gathering, processing, storing, disposition, and the use of information. It is a social-technical system that consists of machines and people interconnected through a communication channel. It is aimed at creating and using information while being aided by software techniques. Operational processes can be regarded as a set of linked activities or procedures collectively aimed at realizing a common policy goal or a business objective. These processes are defined within the organizational structure context that describes the functional roles and relationships (Song, 2010). The aim of the research paper will be to study and analyze the Functional role of IS in supporting operational processes.

Business processes are classified as automated, partially automated or manual. These categories of business activities are executed in accordance with the given rules that govern the sequence flow logic of activities, functions or the process parts. The workflow defines the automation or the computerized facilitation of business activities in part or as a whole. The IS has the role of defining, controlling, executing and monitoring businesses workflow or processes. To increase productivity and increase economic efficiency of an organization, it is important and necessary to improve business processes through business processes reengineering (Lang, 2009).

The IS software manages the execution of operation processes involving applications, people, and the information sources on bases of process models. These roles are implemented in an architecture framework which describes the architecture of the IS. In is constituted of three layers which include the business layer, the process layer, and the resource layer.

The business layer analyses and defines the business rules, business models, and the organization model. The process layer is divided into two; the process design layer that is aimed at delaminating and modeling the business processes, and the process enactment layer that initiates and executes business process models. The resource layer covers the enterprise resources.

For any business to execute its processes and procedures, it requires a well-organized IS that will perform the automation of processes. The research exercise on the Functional role of IS in supporting operational processes will help analyze and understand IS into details (Nilson, 2006).
