Social Welfare History

Depression is one of the clinical issues adolescents face. It involves a feeling of sadness or anxiety and affects one’s mood, thoughts, and body. It leads to poor grades in school, bad behavior, feeling of despair, and fatigue in those affected. The best treatment for depression comes from professionals in a mental healthcare facility, who provide therapy to the patient over the desired period of time. Mental healthcare professionals are the best because they are able to work in a personal or community setting to practice holistic, dynamic, and strength-based psychotherapy (Porter, 2012).

Maltreatment, family violence, and substance abuse are all dysfunctional behaviors that are likely to result from intergenerational issues. There is no single factor known which could fully explain the way maltreatment is transmitted from generation to generation. To solve the problem of family violence and maltreatment, it is important for healthcare professionals to involve both the adult and child in treatment. However, the treatment suitable for children is not the same as the one suitable for adults. While treating children, the professional should develop a connection with the child victim and use play therapy, group therapy, or family therapy. Also, couple therapy is another strategy, which can be used with the adults. Psychotherapist should encourage spouses to disclose their emotions and thoughts about positive and negative matters concerning relationships in the family (Tomison, 2012). He should also encourage them and persuading them to make their own decisions in life.

There are several factors that contribute to homelessness among children. These factors include unaffordable housing, domestic violence, poverty, substance abuse, and mental illnesses. Aratani (2009) claims that potential risks that homeless and runaway children face are threats to their mental health, violence, trauma, and violent crime. To gain a deeper insight into this matter, a healthcare professional should be friendly and, since members of this group do not have a permanent place of residence, he must be flexible and accessible to the youths by working with them in clinics, streets, or wherever they may be.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs consists of bodily/physiological needs, safety needs, love needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. One of the situations where this can be applied is during palliative care. In this situation, it is important to monitor patient’s symptoms, assist him/her with fear relief, increase his/her self-esteem, and surround the patient with love to help him/her and his family experience self-actualization. Applying Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory will motivate the family and caregivers to care for the patient. Therefore, the patient will live his life having good relationships with people around him (Zalenski, 2006).
