Ethical education is one of the earliest form passing knowledge. It is the very first form of knowledge that every child experiences under the tutorial guidance of parents and later through teachers in the course of education. Down through history, there have been two main goals of education in many countries across the globe i.e. to help learners to become smart academic-wise and to assist them acquire good values that are vital for life. Moral character development is the fundamental aspect to individual, educational, and professional advancement in life. The process of acquiring good character is not automatic; instead it is progressively developed through a sustained process of teaching, illustration, learning and application. It is formed and developed through a process of character education (Ros & Moss, 90).

In today’s society, the youth requires a deliberate initiative of teaching and helping them espouse good values as they are more susceptible to many opportunities and dangers than precedent generations. They are being faced by many pessimistic sways through the media and other peripheral sources ubiquitous in today’s civilization. Meanwhile, daily pressures are impinging necessity on the duration which parents have with their children are increasing. Studies reveal that in parents spend only 38.5 minutes per week (translating to 34.4 hours a year) in significant conversation with their children, while they spend 1,500 hours watching TV (Harpers, 21). Since children spend most of their time in school (about 900 hours per year), it is vital therefore for teachers to take the initiative of building and developing good values in students.

Values are principles and standards that people endeavor to apprehend in their lives and which they use to guide their behavior. After having acquired values, we use them to evaluate what is crucial in life as well as judging between right and wrong in human conduct. When good values become inherent to personal individuality and a person’s way of life, they become part of our character and they are called virtues. Good values are vital to a person as one gets to attain self-satisfaction and happiness in life, attain great potential in school and work, be of help and benefit to the people around, and add to the whole human society. There are cornerstone values that are principal for every individual to acquire. These values include honesty, truthfulness and integrity. This paper attempts to critically analyze the significance of teaching honesty, being one of the fundamental values that are principle in ones life.
