“Death Be Not Proud” by John Donne

This poem is about death and its side effects on human beings. John Donne speaks about death in an occult manner. He explains that death cannot take away our souls. When a person dies, the soul remains roaming in the world while the body rests in peace. He also condemns death and explains why it should not be proud of its deeds – “Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men, and dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell”. He claims that death is just an agent of the desperate men and kings as well as a slave of doom. The main goal Donne pursued when writing this poem was to express his ridicule towards death. The poem explains that one’s fears have no power over him. Many people are afraid of death, but from Donne’s perspective we find out that it is a slave to other people, thus making it less superior over the human race. The dramatic voice used in the poem helps the readers to better understand how the poet feels about death. “Death be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not soe, For, those, whom thou think’st, thou dost overthrow”. According to Christians, when a person dies he or she remains sleeping until Jesus comes back and raises all the dead from the long sleep. The poet’s main argument lies in the Christian faith and beliefs, which promise life after death. The rhyme scheme of the poem analyses death from different sides. The last lines of the poem “One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally, And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die” – necessitate the Christian belief of eternal life. Donne implies that Death should never get to be proud since we eventually live forever.

In conclusion, the two poets had a message to deliver which was well achieved. As for Frost, he has been a good role model to many in both America and the whole world. People now look up to his words when making decisions. Donne has played a great role in the literary sphere either. His message, that one’s fear must not overpower you, has made many to have strength to accomplish great things even when they feel they are defeated and stuck.
