Reflection on the IOM Future of Nursing Recommendations

How I Fit in the IOM Future of Nursing Recommendations

Nursing research indicates that education can make a considerable difference in clinical practice. This research also indicates that nurses with baccalaureate degree often have better results after interacting with the patients. It is evident that there are lower mortality rates for patients who have interacted with highly educated nurses. These nurses are more proficient in making diagnoses. Recommendation 4 suggests that more than 80% of all nurses should have at least a baccalaureate degree, this will be necessary to improve the quality of health-care provided by the nurses. This will also lock out most nurses as they currently do not hold baccalaureate degree.

Nurses have a very critical role in the future. They need to ensure that in future they are able to produce safe and high quality health care for all patients. In order to achieve this, the nurses must practice what they have been trained. Therefore, it is appropriate to double the number of nurses with a doctorate degree by 2020. Due to the increasing population, it is necessary to ensure that the number of healthcare providers with the required skill and competency is increased. By 2008, out of all the nurses were in the profession, only 13.2% registered nurses had a Doctorate degree. To achieve recommendation 5, the government will have to in career ladder programs supporting baccalaureate and funding them as they study for their Masters and Doctorate degrees.
