Terrorism is the use of violence or threat to violence on civilians to instil fear with an aim of passing an ideology to those in authority. Terrorists also conduct their activity as a method of revenge if those in authority have not met the demand of the terror group. Terrorists attack civilians so that they can instil fear in the society, and the government or the targeted authority will listen to them and meet their demands. There are increased terrorist attacks in East Africa, especially because the countries have worked together to combat the al-Shabaab terrorist group in Somalia. Terrorists are uncomfortable with these actions and want foreign governments to withdraw their forces from Somalia. However, it is not possible for the countries to withdraw before achieving the initial goal. As a result, terrorists are conducting several terror attacks to revenge and tell the governments to quit from Somalia.

On a tragic day, four terrorists linked with the terror group al-Shabaab entered the mall and invaded Nakuammt supermarket as the first station in the mall. Businesses had started their work day as usual with no suspicion of any attack. The terrorists entered the mall and started shooting everyone on sight. They started with all security officers and then shot everyone they could see. After the attack, 67 people were killed and 175 injured were left. As a result of the terrorist attack, three floors of Westgate collapsed. Nakumatt supermarket was one of the stores that collapsed. Goods worth millions of money were destroyed. The terrorists caused Nakumatt Holdings Limited large loses, which they could not predict.

Kenya security forces tried to deal with the terrorists but it was too late. The terrorists had already entered the building, and it was a tough war. The other problem was that no one knew the exact number of attackers inside the mall. Therefore, the police had to take time to avoid more deals. When the police could not handle the case, Kenya Defence Forces were called upon to assist. Neighbouring countries and international organizations also sent backup. The mall was under siege for about 72 hours. A lot of property worth millions of money was destroyed. By the time the mall was rescued, too much loss had occurred.

Short/ Long Term

Nakumatt Holdings Limited had to react immediately and do something to retain its customers. After the investigation, which took two weeks in the mall, Nakumatt Holdings Limited started to renovate the building with the help of Westgate Mall management. Three floors had collapsed. The fire that broke during the attack had burn many goods. Therefore, a lot of work was needed to be done in order to reconstruct the building. When reconstruction was finished, Nakumatt transported goods from some of the branches to the renovated building. The company has 50 branches that shared the loss (Bentley, 2013). The branches contributed, and, consequently, Nakumatt Westland was able to rise again. Since the terrorist attack was as a result of the insecurity in the country, Nakumatt Supermarket went to court to sue the government. The management wanted the government to compensate them for the losses incurred. The government agreed to pay for the vehicles that had been destroyed inside and outside the mall.
