Although interpersonal communication is a fundamental process by which meanings are perceived and understandings are reached among human being, there might be some barriers in the communication system that prevents the message from reaching the receiver. These barriers are as follows:

  1. Language Barrier. The different languages, accent, vocabulary and dialects represent national as well as regional barriers in communication. For instance, the use of badly explained and/or misunderstood, difficult or inappropriate messages can cause confusion.
  2. Cultural Barriers. Education age, gender, economic position , social status, cultural background, health, temperament, beauty, religion, popularity, and political belief, values, ethics, assumptions, motives, and aspirations might set people apart and therefore create a barrier.
  3. Individual Barrier. This might result from a personal and perceptual discomfort of an individual.
  4. Organizational Barrier. It is formed by the internal and external surroundings, such as big working areas, for example, that can physically separate people.
  5. Attitudinal Barrier. Limitation in mental as well as physical ability, understanding intelligence, unreliable sources and pre-mature notions influence the attention and form a mechanical barrier which impacts on the opinion and attitude.
  6. Channel Barrier. Insufficient or lacking interest in communication, sharing of information or problems accessing can block the channel and thus badly influence the accuracy, effectiveness and clarity.

Therefore, in order to be able communicate efficiently on the interpersonal level, we must overcome all these barriers.
