AIDS United is a nonprofit health organization with an aim of ending AIDS in the United States (AIDS United, 2011). It supports many people in the southern part of the United States who have contacted AIDS and cannot afford its medication by providing them by ARVs, food and care. It also provides the population with information on the preventive measures they should take to avoid contacting HIV. It cooperates and assists other smaller organizations with both funds and information to improve the quality of life of those affected and those living with HIV/AIDS.
Development Function
AIDS United has employed Angela Van Croft, Donor Relations Officer, who is in charge of development functions of the organization. The Donor Relations Officer is in charge of identifying potential donors and requesting them to help the organization to achieve its objectives through donation. She also identifies activities that can attract revenue to the organization and proposes the kind of developments to be done by collected money.
The organization gets its revenue through donations from different sources. It allows organizations and well wishers to donate to their bank account or through their website. It partners with both public and private sectors which provide it with funding they need. In 2011, it got majority of its funds from the following organizations (Aids United, 2011): $50,000 to $99,999: van Ameringen Foundation, Merck, Chevron, Walgreens, and Rodgers Innovation Fund; $100,000 to $499,999: Fred Eychaner, Gilead, Tides, Open Society Foundations, Janssen, ViiV Healthcare, and Levi Strauss Foundation; $500,000 to $999,999: Aids Fund; $1,000,000 to $3,999,999: Ford Foundation, Corporation for National and Community Service, Elton Aids Foundation, and Johnson and Johnson; and $4,000,000 and over Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. From the collected money, for every dollar, $0.89 goes directly to the people affected. The rest are used in support of the organization operations.
AIDS United works with other organizations to assist those affected by HIV/AIDS. It gives the organizations grants through their “network of community partners” or through their special programs such as “Access to Care, Generations: Strengthening Women and Families Affected by HIV/AIDS, Southern Reach, and Syringe Access Fund’ (Aids United, 2012). Organizations which want to be funded by AIDS United make request for grants by explaining how best they are going to help the community with the funds and if approved, they are given the funds. AIDS United has also started a revenue generating business where it sells jewelers to help raise more funds.
The organization generates most of its funds from donor organizations and it sees it as the most promising source of funds in the future. The funds generated from sale of jewelers are slightly declining because there has been a decline in their sales in the past few years. The activities of the organization are very sophisticated because it ensures funds reach the desired people. It normally requires any organization it assisted to bring them a report on how it utilized the money they were given. This ensures that all the money given is used appropriately.
Conclusion
AIDS United is a nonprofit health organization that works with other grass root organizations to end HIV/AIDS in the United States. It receives its funds from various donor organizations through their bank accounts or donations from their website. It ensures the funds it offers organizations are well utilized by requesting a feedback report from the organizations.
