Indeed, the role of engineering skills in various facets of human life cannot be underestimated. In today’s society, many industries are incorporating engineering experts in their workforce. As I grew up in my humble background in Bolivia, one of the poorest countries in South America, I had the desire to pursue a course that would help me give services to the needy. My passion for engineering grew more in high school, as I had great interest in mathematics and physics. This led me to join the Pasadena City College to pursue a course in engineering. Given the chance to join the University of Southern California (USC), I would either pursue my first major selection in electrical engineering or my second major in mechanical engineering.
Since my childhood, I have been curious as I question everything, because I believe there is no single solution to a problem. Through the engineering club at PasadenaCityCollege, I have gained a different perspective of engineering as a major that deals with more than just solving technical problems. I believe in seeking solutions rather than taking situations as they are, and thus, I took the initiative to participate in several projects such as Underwater Remote Operated Vehicle, Laser Harp, Hybrid Bike and Power Supplies. I have learnt that engineering is all a matter of being creative and groundbreaking in all aspects of life.
I do not believe that engineers are geeks, because I have always participated in different extra curriculum activities while in college. As Albert Einstein once said, “I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious,” and this is also true with every step of my educational and professional journey. Being an engineer, I believe, is all about having a passion to generate and contribute to the world. From my own perspective, engineering is all about discovering what will make the domain an improved place to live in. Without doubt, University of Southern California (USC) is the best place for such a passionate about engineering person as I am.
