Being the smallest unit of the society, a family is very important to it. Everybody owes their origin to a family. Therefore, it warrants that the tradition of any society is constituted in the family unit. It means that there is a great need for proper family values to be upheld since that will eventually reveal itself in the larger society. Family dictates the kind of government that comes to power. When family values deteriorate, the society made up of these small units cannot help having corrupted values. This fact explains the importance of a family.

I am a member of a modern nuclear family composed of father, mother, my two sisters, and I. It is a kind of a family I am proud to belong to, although it does not exclude the fact that I miss the feeling of having a brother. Despite being happy to have a family, it is evident that there happen different situations in life. It means that shortcomings will always be there. There are advantages and disadvantages almost in everything, and the family is not an exception (Daly, 2011).

I was born between two sisters, which made it difficult for me to learn a boy’s way of life. Our upbringing was mostly girlish; hence I started practicing masculine lifestyle much later in life. My grandparents lived a distance away and there was not enough time to visit them; hence I did not get much education from them. My parents’ coordination in bringing up the family is something that entails much admiration. It makes me realize that mutual understanding between the spouses is of the essence for the sake of peace and harmony in a family.

There are things that we do as all together that register their importance. Ours is a Christian family with a tradition of attending church services every Sunday. It is very significant in my life because it ensures the family bond. This tradition is the foundation of the cohesion amongst us. Secondly, I am proud of the respect that we have among ourselves. There is authority and respect according to age. It enables us to operate harmoniously in all aspects of our family life and ensures very little or no conflict at all. Every month we set particular days for the family to sit together and evaluate each member’s activity and conduct. We discuss how to correct what is wrong and emphasize on the right course. It has become instrumental in building the character of each of us. Such tradition has made my family attractive to the rest of the surrounding community. It has also played an important role in enabling me to understand myself, get to know my temperament and the ways of managing it.

Nevertheless, there is something that I seriously feel should be changed. That is the fact that, with all respect, our dad operates in the same capacity as the mother. It is the result of the requirement of women being treated equally with men worldwide. In my opinion, it reduces the man’s authority and almost kills the set up that dictates a man to be the head of the family.

In conclusion, a family is a delicate unit that, if not taken good care of, can most assuredly be the cause of a society that cannot stick together for any positive progress. In like manner, it becomes very important in creating a morally upright society if proper checks are done to ensure maintenance of virtues and morals. It is a responsibility of every person to ensure that the family success is maintained in all parts of the world.
