New Jersey’s Motor Vehicles

The study will take 30 days and will cover all the public transport system in New Jersey. The modes of transport that will be studied are road and rail. Cars, trucks and buses are the major means of transport at 6,246,882 in number serving New Jersey’s population of 8,682,661 (Grava & Thomson, 2003) . Trains will also be studied with emphasis on the pollution effect of diesel and electric locomotives. The methods that will be used in the study include direct observation, accessing past researches on the area and interviews with the users and management of the modes of transport.

The team will be divided into two groups. Group one will observe New Jersey’s motor vehicles, while recording the emission of pollutants and also interview residents near the highways of how they have been affected by pollution. Group two will head to the train station to engage the users of how they have been affected by using either diesel or electric trains, they will also interview the management of the New Jersey transit, to find out of the pollution effects of trains they operate and how they plan to cut it to manageable levels.

The research teams that will cover the road system will head to interstate l-95 to observe and record the pollution effects of the trucks plying the road. They will also interview a sample of families living along the interstate on how they have been affected, with some of the questions being on health care costs due to diseases like asthma caused by pollution. The members of the team remaining will be divided to cover a sample of the 247 bus routes.

The second team will head to the train station. They will interview some of the users on how they have been affected by using the trains. The team will also interview the management on the pollution levels of their trains and how they plan to cut pollution. Finally, through literature review, the research team will consult previous research undertaken by various stakeholders on the pollution of the New Jersey public transport system.
