In my opinion, there are various justification why Sade should be burnt as well as why he should not be burnt. Some of the reasons why we should not burn Sade include the following: firstly, Beauvoir states that if we burn Sade, we will be burning his books something that will have social implications. Secondly, Beauvoir argues that Sade does not openly belong to the Nazi’s ideology and stresses on the important the book to the society. Thirdly, Sade’s books contain philosophies about feminism and humanism. Beauvoir concurs with his argument that both feminism and humanism should be open and explained within the range of human condition. We cannot burn Sade without first accepting or contradicting with his views. She states that such books contain vital philosophies on freedom especially that defining sexuality. Beauvoir states that, “to accept as true or right what he writes, but to consider a new the human condition in its fundamentally sexual and gendered dimension” (Beauvoir, 180). Being a feminist, Beauvoir refuses to advocate the burning of Sade despite the fact he exposes cruel treatment of women, domination as well as sexual violence. She urges people to read the books.
Some of the reasons why Sade should be burnt include the following: firstly, Sade exalts the totalitarian society during the Nazi regime in most of his philosophies. He prefigured its massive cruelty as well as exposing some of the evils of the regime. According to Albert Camus, the book should be burned because it tries to purify and ritualize the German Nazi of evils such as homosexuality, communism, and cruel treatment of women as well as violation of human rights.
