The western classical concert that I choose to review and report is the All Tchaikovsky.

This concert is performed by National Philharmonic at the Music Center at Strathmore. It was performed on February 5th, 2012 at 3:00 pm. The conductor is Piotr Gajewski. This all-Tchaikovsky concert commenced with the Polonaise, an energetic and dynamic dance from the opera Eugene Onegin. Then concert continued with majestic and virtuosic work Concerto No. 1, after that overture-fantasy Romeo and Juliet was played. The 1812 Overture concluded the concert.

Eugene Onegin is an opera in three acts. Brilliant dance composition Polonaise was written for opening scene of Act III, it is a theme for a glittering ball at the luxurious house of Tatiana and her husband Prince Gremin. The Piano Concerto ? 1 in B-flat minor is an incredibly beautiful piece of music. I love Tchaikovsky very much but this piece has such a power of perception that it is simply overwhelming from the first accords. It traditionally has tree movements. The first movement is introduced with four emphatic B-flat minor chords that then move into a passionate and simultaneously lyrical theme in D-flat major. The leading motif of the concerto is a Ukrainian folk which is brightly contrasted with a romantic theme. The leading motif is recapitulated in the tonic key and the romantic theme recapitulated in the tonic major. However, there is no the tonic minor in the end, but a triumphant and optimistic coda. B-flat major concludes the concerto. Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy is a piece of music that can move to tears. Tchaikovsky perfectly understand that drama pivots on contrasting opposites such as hatred, vendetta and blood fluid between two hostile families and love between Romeo and Juliet, therefore he composed two principal musical themes to express these opposites. The first, more dramatic and dynamic, is vendetta theme, and the second love theme is lyric and gentle.

The 1812 Overture immortalized the Battle of Borodino. It seems to me that it is the most dynamic work of Petr Tchaikovsky. The plaintive of the Holy Cross commenced the piece and then music moves through composition of pastoral and martial themes portraying Russia under French invaders. Turning point of the 1812 war is the Battle of Borodino, so at this point the score calls for five Russian cannon shots contrasting a fragment of La Marseillaise. Then can be heard victory bells as well as a triumphant repetition of God Preserve Thy People. A musical theme appears God Save the Tsar emerges and eleven scored shots thundering at the end of the piece.

It is really hard to say what impressed me the most. The members of orchestra were all dressed traditionally in black (women and men). It was stylish and smart clothes, so they look solemnly. Actually, the solemnity of an atmosphere is what I especially like about philharmonic. The musical pieces that were played are all magnificent. It is almost impossible to choose one that I like the most. I think that Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy is my favorite, but only because I love very much the gentle lyrics of love theme. The orchestra performance was an excellent. They were able to conduct the atmosphere, mood, lyrics and dynamic of every piece. They absolutely possessed the audience by their performance. It was hard to resist the dancing when the orchestra plaid Polonaise. The Piano Concerto was dramatic and charming; it gave me the feeling of spring and autumn, suffering and joy, arrival and departure. The Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy is my favorite so it was transcendent. 1812 Overture have been the best ending for the concert ever. The dramatic, solemn and tragic performance of Borodino Battle filled me with power, energy and feeling of triumphs of good over evil. It always impresses me when I hear good music that excellently performed by orchestra is a synergy that present amongst musical composition, performance and conductor. They complement each other in the best way. I especially like when orchestra is conducted by Piotr Gajewski. It is obvious that a good conductor is a big part of orchestra’s success but Piotr Gajewski he is not just a good conductor, he is simply driving force and power of the music. On the stage he creates magic. Owing to the student guide and knowledge that I receive I could distinguish introductions and expositions, as well as different tempos, themes and music forms. In Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy as well as in 1812 Overture I recognized the familiar sonata form. I distinguished that all compositions of Tchaikovsky is related to romantic era because of passionate of the music. I also can understand that it was music the end of 16th and the beginning of 18th century because of sonatas, symphonies, operas, and concertos were invented in this period of time, and in these pieces of music can be tracked melody, harmony, rhythm, tuning, harmonic progression and performance practice of that period.
