The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba

William Kamkwamba’s “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” brings to the reader an autobiography of the author’s life in Malawi. In the book, the author shares his life experiences with the readers. The book begins with a description of author’s childhood to his teenage years when William realizes his dream of building a windmill. As the author grows up, he narrates that he was always tangled with the past traditions. His father believed in witchcraft, wizardry and edged in western mentality. Nonetheless, the disposition of his father does not bur him from achieving his goal in life. William portrays himself as an extraordinary and smart boy. Oftentimes he together with his friends took radios and tried fixing them. In some instances, they were successful, while in other cases they failed.

It is noteworthy that William decides to formulate his own story far from emulating European fondness. Since the writer is developing, he chooses to discuss his present and later life. He composes his autobiographical account that is full of immediacy and less remoteness that even more mature writer may not be able to absorb. There is a sense of present tense in the book, even though its description is in past. In fact, the author tells the story at the age of 23 from a small family based in a small group called Wimbe. The author faces numerous setbacks when learning in rural school. However, the boy is bright and determined to ensure several things work out for him. Some of the things the author begins to improve include, “Making scarp bicycle, tractor parts, vehicles, and windmills from powering a small bulb to wiring many rooms” (134). The eventual goal of William was to make his family live a healthier life. This is a concept that made William take a book and read, which soon made him assume working on his biggest project to improve the lives of others.
