In any organizations, a union is an umbrella through which the workers’ welfares and rights are protected against employers who may violate them through under payment of wages, layoffs and sacks. They fight against unfavorable working environment and for the purpose of resolving internal conflicts between the workers and the employer. Therefore, some of the reasons for the unionization between 1960s and 1970s were standing for the protection of workers against unnecessary layoffs, which were a result of employment fluctuation due to work reduction and sacks from employment that lead to high levels of unemployment among the people. The formation and growth of unionism was intended to protect and give conditions through which a worker may lose a job as a result of violating the organizational rules and regulations (Freeman, 1986).
Change of attitude by the public sector gave an increase and a major contribution to the establishment of the unions. This was attributed by the factor that unions could lead to establishment of projects and profit-making investments with the workers leading to income-generating activities; hence improved living standards appear through further creation of jobs in the society. Consequently, there was an aggressive step by the organizations to represent the public sector in favoring a collective policy that could ensure a fair bargain for the workers’ welfare in the governmental setting (Brock & Lipsky, 2003).
Finally, the change of state and federal law regarding the formation of unions gave an encouraging factor to the workers in order to find a channel through which they could be able to voice their claims in regard to their wages and salaries in good faith and hence vanishing unfair treatments from the employer. Therefore, the unions were recognized by the organizations and the governing bodies, leading to more and more formations and reliance by the workers.
