Setting the scene (Scientific Method)

Problem 1
You arrive home late at night. You walk up to the front door, unlock it, and reach in to turn on the light switch located just inside the front door. The light does not come on! Now what? Step One: Exploration and observation.

The first instinct is to glance around the neighborhood to see if the next door neighbor has lights, if it’s a neighborhood with close neighbors. If not then I will use my mobile phone light to get into the house and close the door.
My second instinct will be to wonder if the electricity has been disconnected, depending on if I had paid my bill or not. If I had not paid my bills then I can assume that there electricity has been disconnected, of which then I will blame myself for being late with the payment. If I had paid the bill then I will wonder if the bulb has blown, or the fuse has tripped.

Step Three: Formulate a Hypothesis
In the case of unpaid bills, I will use my mobile phone light and seek an alternative form of light if I have one available .On the other hand if I had paid my bills, then I shall presume then the bulb has blown, in which case wonder if other bulbs in the other rooms are okay, or will probably reflect on how to get to the fuse box if it’s in the house.
Step Four: Action
If it’s a case of disconnection, I shall proceed to look for a torch , if I have one or light some candles if I need some more light to do something before I sleep.

On the other hand if I had paid all the bills, then I shall proceed straight to the next switch in the house to test if it’s a case of blow bulb, if no light still, I shall proceed to the location of the fuse box and check if maybe one of the fuse has tripped. If it’s a tripped fuse then I shall turn it back on, being cautions not to touch any live wires if any. If light comes back in the other rooms and none in the living room, then I shall have to replace the living room bulb.

Step Five: Reflect on the Results
In the case of unpaid bills, I shall use the current form of light I have available and ensure that I make my payments the next day hoping that the will be on surcharge on the outstanding fee and blaming myself for now I will have to also pay reconnection fee, if it’s applicable. If it was a case of tripped fuse then I shall consider probably having an electrician the next day to check and make sure that there electricity system is okay.

Problem 2

I wake up early in the morning ready to go out, I take my car keys together, lock the door, get into my car and switch on the ignition to start the car and it does not even make a starting noise. Step One: Exploration and observation.

My first instinct is to try again and see if it will start. If it does not then I presume that the battery id flat or dead.

I look round the car to see if I had left the car lights on, the indicators or the roof lights. Or maybe the battery leads have been disconnected.

Step Three: Explore available options

I presume that the car battery leads   disconnected, or if it’s a dead battery then it need replacement. The other option is if there is an electronic dysfunction of the system.

Step Four: Action

The first thing I do is to open the bonnet and check if the battery leads are not loose. I return to the car and start the ignition hoping it will start. If it does not start then I presume the battery if flat, in which case I can call the mechanic or a car service insurance i.e. AA to come fix the car. If I have an alternative means of transport, I will take it and have the car fixed later, depending on the urgency of where I was going.
Step Five: Reflection on the Results

If the mechanic comes and finds that it was my fault, I had left the lights on, then I will be rated myself and ensure that I do not repeat the same mistake again. If it’s an old car then I will consider selling it or trading it in for a better more efficient car, depending on available resources.
