Leadership is one critical skill in human development. This is because all aspects of human undertaking revolve around leadership. Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. Leaders carry out this process by applying their leadership attributes, such as beliefs, values, ethics, character, knowledge, and skills. Although your position as a manager, supervisor, lead, etc. gives you the authority to accomplish certain tasks and objectives in the organization, this power does not make you a leader, it simply makes you the boss. Leadership differs in that it makes the followers want to achieve high goals, rather than simply bossing people around.
Factors of leadership
There are four factors of leadership and these include: Follower, Situation, a leader and Communication
In the process of exercising leadership quality there must be a leader and a follower .Towards this, DuBrin, (2009) illustrates that,
Different people require different styles of leadership. For example, a new hire requires more supervision than an experienced employee. A person who lacks motivation requires a different approach than one with a high degree of motivation. You must know your people! The fundamental starting point is having a good understanding of human nature, such as needs, emotions, and motivation. You must come to know your employees' be, know, and do attributes.
A leader should be one who has done a thorough self assessment and knows who he or she is and above all knows the people and the leadership style to adopt. In the exercising all these attribute, a leader should be honest, understanding and posses a high level of integrity.
“Communication is one of the greatest tools in leadership” Clark, (2010).This is because it the mode of communication that determines whether people understands what is required of them.
Different circumstances call for different leadership approaches which a leader should be ready to embrace at all times.
