Traditionally, some professions were dominated by men due to the nature of work. However, with the wave of feminism that started in 1970’s, women started pursuing careers that were historically dominated by men. For instance, Anne K. Wedow, Carolyn Y. Mitchell and Kathleen Kline were hired as the first women firefighters in Kansas City in 1977. The three women enrolled at the Fire Academy before deployment with fire companies. Overtime, Kline was promoted to become a fire captain, while both Wedow and Mitchele rose to become fire apparatus operators.

How Does the Images Reflect the Impact of Feminism?

Feminism was traditionally envisioned as less superior to masculinity. However, in 1970’s, the feminists fought for equal rights as they believed that women could be equal in rights and profession choices as their male counterparts (Vidal, 1971). For instance, Rabbi Sally Preisand was the first woman to be ordained as a women priest in the United States. However, she encountered fierce opposition from both teachers and male classmates who were of the opinion that she should have become a wife rather than a rabbi. Nonetheless, her parents encouraged her to pursue her rabbinic dream through which she later established rabbinic network, which has been instrumental in fighting for equal opportunity for women (Minardi, 1970).

According to visual sources, feminists worked tirelessly to transform the role of women at the workplace. They demanded respect for women in all their duties and no special regard for men on the basis of sexuality (Koedt, 1972). In this vein, feminists believed that women should join their career path to stop the dependence on men. Comparing women in the coal mine with visual sources, this image is quite clear that females are also allowed to enter coal mines and carry out the underground work. Notably, women work for similar hours as their male counterparts, and there is no work difference on the basis of sex. However, though viewed as less competent by many employers, they proved to be equal in work as their male counterpart.

Other Sorts of Images Necessary to Convey the Broad Contours

of Women’s Paid Labor

Evidently, women have been considered as inferior to men in the workplace. However, these trends have changed by the time; presently, there are fields where women also do well as men (Gaskell & Taylor, 2004). For instance, the field of engineering has been predominantly associated with men, but since the advent of feminism, many women are pursuing this field and they do equally well as their male counterparts. Other areas that were traditionally dominated by men, such as transport sector including drivers of heavy trucks, are also areas that women are succeeding in now.
