Media globalization is a consequence of communication technology that cannot be impeded. Narasaiah (2005) argues that the globalisation of media is an essential catalyst for all other types of globalization taking place around the world. An example of media globalization is the rise of multinational media, which plays an integral role in the success of global enterprises. It is imperative to embrace globalization instead of panicking and attempting to evade results that are an obstacle to free communication. Media globalization imposes both significant benefits and harmful effects which must be critically analyzed in order to ascertain its significance in facilitating global communication. The fundamental argument is that the media globalization has far-reaching benefits that outweigh the harmful effects.
A notable benefit of the worldwide media globalization is that it has made international communication easier due to the present new communication platforms (Barfield & Welfens, 2003). The internet is an instance of world media that enables conveying information and gathering of worldwide opinion on sensitive issues. The digital form of communication media has enabled multimedia authoring implying that information can be shared globally and attracts the attention of many people. This proves that global media has the capability to surpass cultural boundaries and unite people (Narasaiah, 2005). The World Wide Web provides streams of information that are readily available. Barfield & Welfens (2003) argue that media globalization will continue to influence human activities. Narasaiah (2005) points out that the internet is the core facilitator of growth of the worldwide media firms such as the Warner Bros. The internet is growing at a faster rate than worldwide media companies are; in fact, global media houses are relying on the internet for expansion.
Irrespective of the benefits posed by media globalization, the harmful effect includes the decline in the growth of local media due to dominance by multinational media firms. Additionally, there is the likelihood that MNCs can threaten the freedom of speech since they suppress the voice of local media. The inference from this observation is that media globalization has only benefited media moguls.
