STIs are usually spread from one individual to another when having sex. There are many kinds of sexually transmissible bacteria, parasites and viruses, which cause gonorrhea, chlamydial infection, syphilis, chancroid, trichomoniasis, genital warts, HIV and hepatitis B. HIV and syphilis, can be transmitted from mother to child (Workowoski 2010).

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is usually caused by bacteria. The infection can be passed from one person to another through mouth, vagina, anus and penis. Neisseria gonorrhoeae usually grow in the moist place of ones body like the urethra. In women, a Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium is usually originated in the reproductive area and even in ones eyes. Gonorrhea symptoms usually manifest after two to five days. In men, chances are usually that they can take up to a month to appear.

Symptoms include a burning sensation when urinating, an increased urinary frequency, penis discharge, swelling of the testicles and sore throat. In women, the symptoms can be very mild. They include discharge, pain when urinating, augmented urination, sore throat and fever. Gonorrhea is treated in either of the two ways, by locating the infected individuals, testing all the individuals suspected to have had sexual intercourse with the infected. This is done to prevent further spread.
