Immune Suppression

A cell is the basic functional unit of an organism while a tissue is cells grouped together to form a functional unit that perform a specific function. Cells and tissues control all the metabolic activities by sending cellular information to various body parts.

Inflammation is a biological process that turns an injured part red and causes swelling. This is a form of immune response that happens immediately after an injury or infection. During this process, the white blood cells, cells responsible for fighting infection are released in the affected tissue or blood in order to get rid of the foreign bodies. The release of these chemicals makes a lot of blood flow to the affected part; hence causing the reddening of the affected area. Some of these chemicals, leak to the tissues, causing them to swell generating pain in the affected part (Bunt 2007).

Cancer cells are produced from normal cells. This is done by oncogene that transforms normal cells to cancer cells. This gene is produced by carcinogens, although it can also be inherited from parents. However, with the help of the immune system and defense mechanisms such as vitamins and minerals, the oncogene can be prevented from altering the normal cells, and that those altered cells do not continue growing and multiplying. Additionally, they can stop and repair the damaged DNA. Consequently, the body is prevented from the growth of cancer cells that later develop to a tumor that results to cancer.

Inflammation is an initiate of cancer which is caused by the cancer cells. Its initiation is contributed by inducing release of cytokines, secreted from the immune system. This chemical increases the number of inflammatory cells thereby causing DNA mutations, oxidative damage and change in the micro environment; hence making it conducive for cancer cells growth. In addition, cancer cells cause inflammation to continue their growth.
