The Counter Culture Movement

Among the most interesting and influential artist of the 60-s I’d like to name following three: Alton Kelley, Karl Ferris and Andy Warhol.

Alton Kelly is known for his psychedelic posters and has become famous for his psychedelic designs of rock bands albums, including his famous album images for Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix and Big Brother and the Holding Company albums and poster of Jack Kerouac. His works “helped define the visual style of the 1960s counter culture” (Grice).

Karl Ferris is known as the innovator of the psychedelic photography. Ferris was a personal photographer of such stars of the 60-s as Jimi Hendrix, Donovan, Cream, Eric Clapton. His works has greatly influenced the style and the image of the 60-s culture and lifestyle all over the world.

Andy Warhol is known as the founder of the pop-art style. His works had become the icon of the 60-s. He made paintings of the symbolic American objects of that time including, Campbell's Soup Cans, Coca-Cola bottles, celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Marlon Brando, Troy Donahue, Muhammad Ali and Elizabeth Taylor.

The cultural manifestation of the main ideas of the 60-s is very diverse. They were exposed in many fields such as music, literature, visual art, clothing etc. But the most influential art that marked the whole era was, of course, music. It was a protest music which went beyond any frames. The music embodied the state of mind and the mood of the whole generation. It was revolutionary music that reflected the main ideas of the time, including anti-war, social, religious and psychedelic themes. It influenced and inspired the minds of the people, especially the youth of that time.
