An adult is as a human being who has attained the maturity stage. In our societies, one is usually considered mature basing on sexual maturity. Adulthood should be furthermore based on legal issues and mental maturity rather than only sexual maturity. This has led to arguments of when a person can be considered an adult.

In our cultures, adulthood has always been considered as when a person starts having secondary maturity. The secondary maturity includes things like menstruation in girls, voice break in boys and appearance of private hairs on both the girls and boys. Basing on these beliefs, it means a person is usually an adult roughly at the age of 14. Probably this may not work, as adulthood is more of mental maturity compared to other factors. In my point of view, an adult should be a person who is of 18 years of age and above. At 18, a person will have acquired general maturity.

General maturity includes the whole requirements for a person to be an adult. Most people complete their high school education at the age of 17-18. Thus, they can be responsible. An adult should be a person who can own property and manage it well. There are legal terms, which are based on adulthood. The laws governing consumption of alcohol usually states that adults can only consume alcohol. It will be so weird to see a 14-year child taking alcohol because they are considered adults due to sexual maturity. Considering all this, an adult should be a person aged 18 and above.

In conclusion, an adult should be a person who has attained general maturity stage. General maturity caters for legal issues, sexual maturity and mental maturity. This proves how awkward it will be considering a 14 year old as an adult. As far as the issue of responsibility is concerned, an adult is a person aged at least 18-years of age.
