Eventing is a  horse event which comprises of the following categories;  the dressage, cross-country and  the show jumping which  is  also  refferd to as  stadium jumping. This event has its origins  in an all comprehensive  cavalry test which  required the mastery of several styles  of riding. There are three main formats;there is   the one-day event  abreviated as ODE,the  two-day event(2DE) and the three-day event (3DE). The sport which was reffered to as the Militaire where the  riders would  complete all the three events  in  a single  day which  was  known as  horse trial. Also, a  The  combined test could  also  involve  any  of the two  phases but  commonly  entailing the dressage and the  show  jumping. (Allen)

Combined training is a type of competition that tests both your dressage and jumping skills. It comprises  of a dressage test which is  followed by a jumping round. You can qualify for the Spillers Response Combined Training Championships, which take place on the first day of the Winter Championships in April, at three different levels: preliminary, novice and open. In the jumping phase, you will be expected to negotiate eight to 12 fences, including at least one double, but there will be no water jumps. The speed demanded at all levels is 325m per minute (350 yards per minute). The same horse and rider partnership must complete both phases and elimination from one phase means elimination from the competition. The rider who qualified the horse must ride him/her in the championships. (Hill)

For the dressage phase, you will be expected to ride a preliminary test. In the jumping phase, the fences will be no higher than 2’9”. The first two jumps will be 2’6”, spread fences will not be wider than 4’6” and parallels 3’3”. In the final, the fences won’t exceed 3’. Triple bars and staircase-type fences will be a maximum width of 5’ and parallels 3’9”. If your horse has less than 20 combined training points, you can enter preliminary combined training classes as long as they are not qualifiers. Once you have won combined training points at open level, you may not compete in preliminary combined training

In a  show jumping competition , usually the  rider has to  use a jumping saddle, which is  usually fitted with a square whitepad. The  rules associated woth  a tack are normally less constraining where various  forms  of bridling and  bitting  are  permitted. The breastplates  together  with   protective boots are majorily worn. The  cross-country, demands  both horse and rider to be  in some  perfect   physical shape as  well as  being   brave together  with  building high  trust  for each other. The  phase consists of nearly  12-20 fences which  is  for the  lower levels  and  30-40 fences which  is  for  the  higher levels normally performed  on a long outdoor circuit. These fences are made  up  of  some   very solidly built natural barriers like  the   telephone poles, stone walls and so on .ther  could  also  be  other  obstacles such as water ponds and streams, ditches, drops  or  a  combinations. In this  cross-country phase, the rider normally applies and   uses the  similar tack  as the  ones  used in the show jumping. However, the  protective boots worn  are usually  taped to provide  extra security which  helps  them   from slipping when   the horse takes  some  jumps into water. In  most horses which  wear shoes are in  adittion  fitted with some  horse shoe studs, to keep them from  slipping.

On the  upper  levels   the  riders may  also  opt to applying  some   grease or some  lard at the  fronts  side of  the  horse’s  legs. This helps  the horse to  slide over  the fences in case  they hang a leg. Riders may  also  tend to  match their  their cross-country tack to appears  as  their   colors. For  instances one may  use  the same color on the  saddle pad as  the  one  on  the  tape for their boots which  matches with   their shirt and  the  protective vest worn. (Maile) To compete in novice qualifiers, your horse must have won less than 21 eventing points, 200 dressage points and 20 combined training points. In the dressage phase, you will be expected to ride a novice test. In the jumping phase, the fences will be 3’3”. The first two jumps will be 3’. Spread fences will not be wider than 5’, parallels 3’6”. In the final, fences won’t exceed 3’6”. Triple bars and staircase-type fences will be a maximum width of 5’6” and parallels 4’3”. A combination fence or doubles will be included. Horses with less than 30 combined training points can take part in non-qualifying novice combined training classes.  Combined training is a type of competition which   tests both the  dressage and jumping skills. It  involves  a dressage test followed by a jumping round. You can qualify for the Spillers Response Combined Training Championships, which take place on the first day of the Winter Championships in April, at three different levels: preliminary, novice and open.

For  the  over jumps, the horse is  also  reqiuired to  have  some  sober and  sound  conformation as  ell as a good  feet. The  riding attire is also   different  for the three phases.  Both the dressage and the  show jumping demand a  very conservative kind  of an  attire, which  is  due  to the traditional turnout for each of the  disciplines. Cross-country  appears  to  be   less formal where  many riders  tends  to  wear clothings  of personalized colors and the emphasis very much on safety equipment. To compete in preliminary qualifiers, ones  horse is not allowed to have won any connected eventing or  any combined training points and must have less than 125 dressage points. For the dressage phase, you will be expected to ride a preliminary test. In the jumping phase, the fences will be no higher than 2’9”.
