Segregation in America

The causes and effects of segregation in America are related to the U.S. historical roots of slavery and nowadays unbalanced relationships in the modern society. The causes of segregation in America are generally laid in the long history of slavery. Indeed, a slave even learning to read was a capital offence. In December of 1865, the Thirteen Amendment to the U.S. Constitution abolished slavery throughout the U.S., so education became available for former slaves. Nevertheless, between 1876 and 1965, the Jim Crow law was enacted almost everywhere in the U.S.: it declared such separate facilities for blacks and whites as public places, schools, and transportation. The military of the United States was also segregated. The Jim Crow law ensured segregation in America. Moreover, in 1892, Homer Plessy (Plessy vs. Ferguson) was sentenced to jail time for driving the “white” car, and in 1896, the sentence was constitutionally approved by the Supreme Court. Such segregation was maintained by law until 1965, when the Jim Crow laws were overruled by both the Civil and Voting Rights Acts. According to Civil Rights Report (2012), students throughout the U.S. are still largely segregated both by racial and economic parameters. 80 % of Latino and 74 % of black students study in racially separate classrooms or in schools with “not white” majority of students. Particularly, 43 % of Latinos and 38 % of Afro-American population attend schools where white students make less than 10 % of the student body (Civil Rights Project Report, 2012).

A Place I Visited as a Child

My grandmother lived in Panama City, Florida and I often visited her in summer when I was a child. It is the most beautiful place on the planet for me. Panama has the most wonderful beaches that I have ever seen in my life: the water of blue color and the finest sand of gold color help relax and clear your mind from concerns and stresses. A whole atmosphere seems tranquil and peaceful. It is always sunny and it has the mildest climate: it is never too cold or too hot. The rains are rare but the air is always fresh. It seems I always was there in a good mood and full of energy. The amusement park in Panama City is my favorite; it has plethora of rides and other means of entertainment and relaxation. However, the most unforgettable experience I got by riding banana boat; it was the funniest, happiest and the most carefree time of my life.
